Testing methods for validating NFV environments
Communications Service Providers (CSPs) have been facing extreme pressure for over a decade to constantly upgrade their network infrastructures to keep up with the exponential growth in smartphones and bandwidth-hungry applications.
Simultaneously, customers are demanding services be turned up in minutes, at the roll of a mouse, instead of waiting weeks or months for the truck roll. Accomplishing such a network rollout, while keeping CAPeX and OPeX costs in check, was a seemingly impossible task for CSPs until the idea of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) came to the rescue.
Today’s NFV ecosystems are still maturing, with a mix of virtualized and physical network nodes and a high number of moving parts. Therefore, CSPs cannot migrate to an end-to-end NFV environment by testing NFV sub-components, in isolation. No amount of VNF benchmarking can compensate for an unstable NFV infrastructure or a MANO layer with interoperability problems.
